Richard III is a colorful Shakespearean historical drama that focuses on the Houses of Tudor and Lancaster. The story is a fascinating character study of the complicated, villainous Richard, and comparisons can be made to power-hungry people in government and industry today. Themes of conscience, family history, justice in government, human nature, and moral choices play a key role in the plot.
Students work independently and in small groups to examine the play from literary and historical perspectives. Activities include map work, focus on family history, analysis of character, and study of stage and blocking of a play.
Evaluation consists of matching, short answer, and dialogue identification with answer keys.
