Maori Edition of "Three Little Pigs"
This series of photographic first word vocabulary books is designed for early childhood and junior level at primary school.
Out of print, advised July 2008. A new collection of traditional Maori legends illustrated in Warren Pohatu's distinctive style. Maori edition
This picture book is about cousins' holidays in a rural Maori community having adventures and fun together - playing in the bush, riding horses, fishing, eeling and swimming at the beach. During the holiday, a death leads to a rahui being placed on the beach. After a year, the rahui is lifted, and they return to the beach full of life and with their cousin in their hearts. The feeling of the book is joyous and wistful, and the illustrations richly evoke the atmosphere of the setting and people.
When Tangiwai and the other tamariki go to visit a farm, they worry that the animals might find the lunches in their bags, but Koro has everything under control. Suggested level: junior, primary.
Maori text, reading age 6-9 years. When a family moves onto a farm they discover that there is a battlefield on the property. At first, the children play in the overgrown rifle pits and trenches, but gradually they begin to wonder what really happened there. This is a story about a girl who discovers that she may have ancestors who fought on both sides during the colonial land wars. What were those wars really like - and what does it mean to be of such mixed ancestry? The book finishes with a page of information about the New Zealand Land Wars.
